Systems Engineering Technician – Amherst, NH – $35–$45/hr (Onsite, Potential Temp-to-Hire)

Location: Amherst, NH – 100% Onsite

Pay Rate: $35–$45/hr (weekly pay)

Assignment Length: 6–9 months with strong potential for conversion

Benefits: Eligible for medical, dental, vision and other contractor benefits

About the Opportunity

Join a small, high-impact engineering team building next-generation autonomous mobile robots for industrial environments. You’ll be the hands-on Systems Engineering Technician who helps bring new robot platforms to life—powering them up for the first time, chasing down bugs, and making sure they’re stable and ready for full system testing and launch.

If you love labs, tools, robots, firmware, and problem solving—and you prefer a bench and a whiteboard over endless slide decks—this role is designed for you.

What You’ll Do

Hands-On Robot Bring-Up & Troubleshooting

· Assemble and bring up mobile robot platforms (differential-drive robots) at the system level.

· Load and update firmware on controllers, run diagnostics, and interpret error logs.

· Troubleshoot issues across electrical, mechanical, and embedded/firmware layers to get robots into a stable, testable state.

Testing & Validation

· Set up and execute manual tests for sensors, controls, motion, safety, and overall robot behavior.

· Work with multiple robot configurations and electromechanical setups and document results thoroughly.

· Support design verification activities to ensure the system behaves as intended before wider deployment.

Collaboration & Bug Resolution

· Partner closely with embedded software, electrical, and mechanical engineers to identify, reproduce, and clearly report issues.

· Retest and validate fixes as new firmware and software builds are delivered.

· Occasionally collaborate with manufacturing test engineers to help define or improve production test procedures.

Automation & Process Improvement (Nice-to-Have but Not Required on Day One)

· Use Python scripts to streamline repetitive test tasks and data collection.

· Suggest pragmatic ways to automate portions of the test workflow once you understand the platform.

What You Bring

Core Technical Skills

· Approximately 3+ years of hands-on experience working with robotics, automation equipment, or complex electromechanical systems in a lab or production environment.

· Strong troubleshooting ability across:

o Electrical/electronic systems (basic circuit boards, wiring, connectors, power).

o Mechanical systems (assemblies, motion components, basic mechanics such as torque, load, and stability).

o Embedded/firmware behavior (loading firmware, running diagnostics, reading logs).

· Proficiency with Python for simple scripting, automation, or tooling.

· Comfort working in Linux/Unix-based environments.

Tools & Platforms

· Familiarity with at least some of the following (or comparable tools):

o Jira & Confluence (or other issue-tracking/documentation tools).

o Requirements or test management tools such as Jama, TestRail, or equivalents.

· Experience using standard lab instruments (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies) and basic hand tools.

Soft Skills & Working Style

· Self-starter who can learn quickly with limited hand-holding and does not ask the same question twice.

· Enjoys digging into documentation, code, and hardware to figure things out.

· Clear, concise communicator—especially when describing bugs and test results to cross-functional teams.

· Calm and organized under time pressure; understands that resolving issues quickly keeps the project on schedule.

· Team-oriented, humble, and able to build positive relationships with senior engineers across mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines.

Nice-to-Have Experience

· Background in embedded software/firmware, robotics test, mechatronics, or automation engineering.

· Exposure to ROS (Robot Operating System).

· Experience with mobile robots, AGVs, or other autonomous systems.

· Industry experience in automotive, aerospace/defense, medical device, industrial automation, or robotics startups.

· Hobbies or side projects that show mechanical/technical curiosity (working on cars, home robotics projects, etc.).

Work Environment & Logistics

· Onsite Requirement: This is a fully onsite role in Amherst, NH (5 days/week). The work is hands-on with physical robots and lab equipment.

· Travel: Occasional short trips to an East Coast engineering site for onboarding or collaboration; future domestic/international travel may be possible if converted and involved in product launches or customer training.

· Schedule: Standard weekday schedule with flexibility during critical testing periods.
