Job Description:

The Carpenter is a skilled person who, under the direction of a Supervisor, performs a wide range of construction tasks including the basic skills of general laborer, skilled laborer and carpentry techniques. The Carpenter may be proficient in a single skill (e.g., layout, concrete (forming and finish), steel erection, frame carpentry, finish carpentry, millwork (manufacture and installation), masonry, etc.) or he/she may be proficient in many construction skills.

Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities expected of a Carpenter.

  • The Carpenter must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • The Carpenter is expected and required to have extensive knowledge of equipment, materials, and procedures relative to his/her assigned tasks and to perform tasks according to approved construction methods.
  • The Carpenter is expected and required to communicate effectively with management, employees, and others as necessary.
  • The Carpenter is expected and required to have the resolve to maintain the goals, the objectives, and the underlying principles of the Company.
  • The Carpenter is responsible for maintaining quality standards, meeting productivity goals, and practicing safe work habits.

Requirements:

Specific minimum levels of knowledge, skill, and ability are expected and required of a Carpenter; these are listed below. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

  • Education: High school diploma, GED, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of three years of experience in the construction industry.
  • Licenses/Certification: Valid New Hampshire or Vermont driver’s license. Other licenses and/or certifications as specified by the Director of Operations & Safety.
  • Language Ability: The Carpenter is able to read, analyze, and interpret drawings and instructions.. He/she can effectively present information and respond to questions from Supervisors.
  • Math Ability: The Carpenter is able to perform basic math calculations and basic construction equations.
  • Skills and Knowledge: The Carpenter has a good understanding of blueprints, drawings, building codes, and other written forms of communication on construction job sites. The Carpenter has a sound base of understanding of his/her craft(s) or trade(s) and can work from detailed instructions. The Carpenter has sufficient knowledge of the construction process, labor, materials, equipment, and tools to start and complete a task of considerable complexity.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the Carpenter to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • The job requires standing and walking most of the time, primarily at job sites. Body movements of turning the head and torso, bending, kneeling, reaching, and flexing the arms are required; and bending the wrists and use of the hands to finger, grasp, handle, and feel tools and equipment are required.
  • The Carpenter must have command of all five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste.
  • The Carpenter must be able to lift up to seventy-five pounds safely.

Working Environment: The Carpenter is required to perform regular job functions in an environment that includes exposure to the full range of weather conditions and a number of disagreeable working conditions consistent with construction sites.

Accountability:

The Carpenter is accountable to the Supervisor (under whom he/she works), the Project Manager (under whom the Supervisor works) and the Director of Operations & Safety. The Carpenter also has an obligation to uphold Company policies as explained in the Employee Manual and Safety Manual. The Carpenter will also take any reasonable action necessary to carry out the responsibilities of this position, as long as such action does not deviate from established Company policies and is consistent with sound business practices and ethical behavior.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • A Carpenter is expected and required to report to his/her assigned job site each day on time and ready to work the scheduled hours.
  • A Carpenter is expected and required to know how to use the tools and materials specified for each assigned task. He/she is expected and required to know the methods used in the processes necessary to start and complete all assigned tasks.
  • A Carpenter is expected and required to fully cooperate with the project Supervisor, the Project Manager, and the Director of Operations & Safety.
  • A Carpenter prepares and provides an accurate daily time card as directed by the payroll clerk.
  • Follows policies established by the Purchasing Agent for procuring (when required by a Supervisor) materials and supplies for his/her project.
  • Maintains a high standard of quality workmanship.
  • Works in cooperation with the Tool Crib Manager to ensure that tools and equipment used at the job site are in good working order and safe.
  • Practices good customer relations and notifies the project Supervisor of customer interactions.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of Company policy, procedures, goals and objectives.
  • Performs other essential duties consistent with all phases of construction as assigned by his/her Supervisor.
