Direct Support Professional (DSP) Float position – Home & Community, full-time with varying

work schedule

Summary: This Home & Community DSP position provides support for individuals with developmental disabilities in their homes or community. The schedule changes every two weeks and incorporates a range of different shifts including days, nights, weekends and overnights.

This caregiving position involves working with individuals either in a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio with a mixture of duties and responsibilities, including direct care, personal care, and community support. Duties vary in intensity and frequency based upon the individual(s) being supported. Extensive training provided.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide support in helping individuals develop and maintain independent living skills including social skills, cooking and nutrition, communication, money management, community activities, household duties, safety, health and personal hygiene.
  2. Provide medication administration, if the individual is unable to administer their own medications. This is determined by the agency nurse. Medication training is provided by the agency.
  3. Assist individuals in accessing and engaging in community and social activities. These could include going out to eat, attending concerts or movies, building friendships, volunteering, taking walks, or participating in sports or workouts. Provide transportation to work and community activities, and must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  4. Support individuals in achieving goals outlined in their service agreements. Adhere to support needs as outlined in a positive behavioral support plan if necessary. Accurately track an individual's progress, inform the Program Manager of any changes affecting an individual's well-being, injury, illness, and health or emotional changes.
  5. Complete required documentation (daily notes, medication logs, incident reports, progress notes, etc.) accurately and on time, and adhere to all regulations, policies and procedures. Follow safety protocols to maintain a safe environment, and report unsafe conditions to the Program Manager. The position acts in accordance with legal responsibilities to ensure the individual's safety and welfare and maintains confidentiality.
  6. Be able to work with a diverse group of people, including staff, individuals, guardians, families, co-workers, and management. Foster and assist individual's good relationships with family, friends, neighbors and the community at large to promote better living standard for individuals. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.

Education/Experience:

Minimum high school diploma or equivalent. Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. Ideal candidate has one to two years' experience working with people with developmental disabilities or as an aide/caregiver. Required to complete all MDS assigned trainings within first six months of hire and then annually.

Working Conditions:

This position is considered an Essential Employees and will be required to work in program and the community as needed. Work schedules vary and include day, evening and overnight shifts throughout the week and weekend. Flexibility is necessary. Must have valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Mileage reimbursement is available. Medication certification and Safety Care training may be required and are provided by the agency. Must be able to lift up to 25+ lbs. with assistance/lifts as needed. Employment is contingent upon passing criminal, motor vehicle, BAAS, DCYF, and OIG background checks.
